Client:Moulding
The Challenge
Moulding had built an exceptional body of work across country house builds, restoration projects, and bespoke joinery – but their portfolio existed only in project files, PDFs, and digital folders. When meeting prospective clients or attending high-value business development conversations, there was nothing physical to leave behind, nothing that communicated the calibre of the work at a glance.
In the world of high-end residential construction, first impressions and material quality carry significant weight. A digital presentation, however well produced, doesn’t sit on a client’s desk for six months.
A beautifully made book does.
The challenge wasn’t simply producing a book, it was creating one from scratch. Moulding had the projects, but not the professional photography, the written narratives, or the editorial framework needed to make them publishable at the standard their work deserved.
The Solution
We delivered the book end-to-end: editorial, photography, and print production.
Photography
The quality of a portfolio book stands or falls on its images. We introduced Moulding to a specialist architectural photographer whose work matched the scale and character of the projects – country houses, heritage restoration, and crafted interiors require a very different eye to standard commercial photography. The resulting images were shot specifically for the publication, giving the book a visual consistency and quality that existing project photography couldn’t have provided.
Editorial & Case Study Writing
We wrote the project case studies featured throughout the book – giving each project a considered narrative that captures scope, character, and craftsmanship without slipping into technical specification or marketing copy. The tone throughout is confident and understated, reflecting how Moulding presents itself and the kind of clients it works with.
Design & Print Production
The production specification was chosen to signal quality from the moment it’s picked up:
- Hardcover, case-bound construction – built to last and to be kept
- Premium art paper – delivering rich, accurate colour reproduction across the photography
- Large format – enabling landscape and architectural shots to be presented at a scale that communicates genuine impact
- Double-page spreads – giving the photography room to breathe and reflecting the scale of the buildings themselves
- Minimal, considered typography** – keeping focus on the work, not the page design
Use Cases
The book was designed to work across three specific business contexts:
- Client presentations – placed on the table at the start of a meeting, it frames the conversation before a word is spoken
- Business development – left with prospective clients as a lasting, high-quality reminder of Moulding’s capabilities that digital materials cannot replicate
- New client onboarding – communicating the breadth and standard of the portfolio to clients at the beginning of a new project relationship
Key Observations
The scope of this project illustrates a pattern common to companies at Moulding’s level: the quality of the work exists, but the infrastructure to communicate it doesn’t. Exceptional projects had been completed without ever being properly documented, photographed, or written up in a form suitable for business development. The book solved all three simultaneously.
Introducing the right photographer was as important as any other element. Architectural photography at this standard is a specialism – getting it wrong would have undermined everything else. The images are what make a large-format hardback worth producing in the first place.
The physical format remains the right choice for this market. For a company whose entire proposition is built around craftsmanship, permanence, and attention to detail, handing a prospective client something generic would have said the wrong thing entirely.
